Tuesday, 22 April 2014 10:53

70 years have elapsed since the time the first deportations started in the spring of 1944 in Transcarpathia when, according to official sources, 85 thousand Jewish ethnic inhabitants, or as some authors claim, 100 thousand Jews were deported to concentration camps leading to the drastic decrease of the Jewish population of Transcarpathia, and almost to its total disappearance.

Most of those who managed to survive in the death camps chose never to come back to Transcarpathia, the Soviet Regime being unfavourable to it.

These days several settlements of Transcarpathia have organized memorial days on the occasion of the Holocaust Memorial Year. Thus, on April 16th Holocaust Memorial Day remembering the tragedy of the Transcarpathian Jews of 1944 and presenting the significant place occupied by them in the region’s history was held in Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian Institute.
